Ecofiend Meets Found Clothing

Two Green Blogs Fight It Out On the Streets With Sustainable Weapons

Eric and I went down to the Co-Prosperity Sphere gallery to see Get It Together: Assemblage Collage & Collaboration this weekend. Cool show, wish we were there for the opening because we missed out on the collage & collaboration part.

But fortunately we did meet the Lauri from Found Clothing. Her blog details her exploits in finding discarded articles of clothing around the city. For example, she recently found a pile of “uncool” clothing behind Buffalo Exchange. On an interview with glamor.com they list some of her best finds, including ”Zara turtleneck sweater, Express Editor pants, a Rampage dress (price tags still on).”

UPDATE: Chicago’s Green Food Resolution

City “Encourages” & “Promotes” Green Food

"Green Food" also promoted by Nilbog City Counsil

"Green Food" also promoted by Nilbog City Counsil

I found a digital copy of the Green Food Resolution, which apparently hasn’t passed City Counsil just yet. The actual document is more of a declaration of intent than a drastic change in policy, which may be why there’s such little press coverage (see Chicago Passes Nation’s First Green Food Resolution).

The last two sentences of the resolution sort of bugs me; focus on the words “encourage” and “promote”. The handful of sites that covered this event all basically agree that there’s really no incentive for anybody to do anything different. It’s not even the beginning of a foundation.

I don’t really want to speculate too much here so we’ll just have to see how this plays out in the next couple of years.

Bicycle Film Festival August 11-16

BFF 09 Chicago

I wanna know what this “Joyride Art Show” is supposed to be; it takes place in the MCA warehouse. Also, I’m for any situation where people get to wear letter costumes! Check out the schedule on their website!

I found this while browsing the Gapers Blog site. They’ve been sending over some traffic our way recently so I thought I’d try to send some love back. It’s a pretty cool site; their arts and culture section is definitely worth taking a look at.

Chicago Passes Nation’s First Green Food Resolution

This week Chicago became the first city to pass a bill that will produce climate-friendly food policies and procedures. I’m having a hard time finding out the details of what this bill actually does but here are a few links:

NyTimes.com
As far as I can tell they are the only newspaper to cover the story so far but most of the article is about how New York is making a bigger and better green food resolution. Glad they could at least take the two seconds to not talk about themselves, I guess.

Farm Sanctuary Press Release
They are key players behind the bill and are trying to get more cities to adopt similar legislation.

Current.com
Short article worth glossing over.

What’s the deal? Where’s the Sun Times or the Tribune on this? Slackers! If you folks find anything new post em up!

Dutch Bike Chicago Interview @ VWYF

John Greenfield Sits Down With Stephan Schier

cobi 032 520x468 Dutch Bike Chicago Interview @ VWYF

Eric and I have been meaning to do this but Vote With Your Feet beat us to it. As we posted earlier (Chicago Dutch Bike Invasion), there are three new European bike shops that have sprung up in our city and Vote With Your Feet recently interviewed Stephan Schier from the Dutch Bike Co.

Here are a few excerpts:

“There’s a trend towards European bikes, but I wouldn’t just call it European bikes. It’s a trend towards quality and comfort, and people who have never ridden a bike or haven’t ridden a bike in ages wanting to ride. “

“In Holland people are interest in something that’s durable, comfortable and low maintenance. So that level of quality isn’t really being sold in the U.S. Most people are being sold finicky, lightweight and maintenance-intensive bikes that have index shifting systems, exposed chains and derailleurs.”

“All the bikes have a built-in handcuff lock on the rear wheel. It’s kind of a medium-duty, convenient locking solution that makes it really easy to lock up if you’re just running in and out of stores doing errands. The lock also has sockets and you can plug in a heavy chain or cable we sell into the sockets and chain the bike around an object. A lot of the frames even come with their own pump.”

John Greenfield from Vote With Your Feet plans on making this part of a series of interviews with Chicago’s new European bike shops so stay tuned.
