Please take the time today to read over some of the coverage of what’s happening in Haiti; they are our neighbors and they need our help. The New York Times has done a very thorough job of covering the situation and Good Magazine has a special post on how you can help.

Empowerment Through Food is another cool program by the folks at Project H that’s being implemented in Brooklyn. If you have the time, check out the Design Revolution Road Show as well for more smart design solution for their eight issues: Water, Well-Being, Energy, Education, Play, Food, Mobility, Enterprise.

To compliment this morning’s post, I thought I’d rehash this great article from Design Observer on the environmental effects of tote bags. I’m sure everybody understands the relevance of totes today in helping get the idea of reuse across and curbing the consumption of plastic bags. Dmitri Siegel’s Paper, Plastic or Canvas? points out that plastic bags were originally introduced as a way to save trees in the 80’s. The problem with plastic is it’s mass use: the world consumes something close to a trillion plastic bags a year and manages to recycle less than 1% of it. Seigel’s article is questioning whether the popularity of totes are really helping or if it’s heading towards the same Catch-22 as plastic bags had.
