Q&A With Google’s Bill Weihl

Geothermal Station | Ecofiend

Green Inc did an interview with Google’s “energy czar” Bill Weihl just last week. Having a honking schoolgirl crush on Google in general, I read this awesome interview and would like to point out fun facts such as Google’s $45 million investment into renewable energy and their dedication to making it cheaper than coal.

Compostable Dinnerware From Fallen Leaves by Verterra

image 1255114855 520x346 Compostable Dinnerware From Fallen Leaves by Verterra

Verterra founder Michael Dwork was inspired to make his line of compostable dinnerware on a trip to India where he saw palm leaves being soaked, oven-baked and made into temporary plates at rural restaurant. The company name itself is derived from Latin “veritas terra” meaning “true to the earth”.  According to their website, their entire manufacturing process uses “just 10% of the energy used in recycling.”

“Our plates are 100% free of chemicals, lacquers, glues, bonding agents or anything toxic. That keeps your meal and our earth free from harm.”

Columbia’s Media Production Center

Media Production Center- Columbia

Columbia’s Media Production Center, designed by the infamous architect firm Studio Gang (I’m a big fan of the Ford Calument Enviornmental Center ) , launches this spring, and judging from the info from the sustainability section on the website, it looks to be a big step in the right direction for any future construction efforts. The building utilizes everything from pre-case concrete panels that remove the need for wood framing and reduce maintenance + noise to a partial green roof that also functions as a space for social events. This building is pretty much tricked out when it comes to green tech, and it makes me proud to be a student at Columbia.

Rent Your Stuff!

Rent this ATV, only $10/mo!

Rent this 'ATV', only $10/mo!

Launched a few months ago (currently invite only) Rentalic is a person to person community that allows you to rent out anything you may own to others, while pocketing some cash and saving the person from having to buy something they may only need once.

Our Vision: Help make the world a better place by building economically and environmentally sustainable communities.

Our Mission: To help people save money, make money, and save the environment by encouraging reuse and sharing through person-to-person renting.

It’s still very new, and it looks like only available to Califorinians, it would be neat if someday the site could function as a sort of Craigslist for renting.

A Light Bulb With a Life Expectancy of 19 years

Everled | Ecofiend

Everled | Ecofiend

Light bulbs have recently become a big pain in my life. A few months ago I moved into a loft apartment with 13 light fixtures. That is a big deal if you have an 11-foot-tall ceiling and no ladder. Needless to say, I was very excited to hear about an energy-efficient light bulb that has the potential to last 19 years.
